Nuclear power in Germany

Nuclear power in Germany produces about one-quarter of the country's electricity but has become a political issue with all plants scheduled to be closed. German nuclear power began with research reactors in the 1950s and 1960 and the first commercial plant coming online in 1969. It has been high on the political agenda in recent decades, with continuing debates about whether the technology should be phased out. The topic received renewed attention at the start of 2007 due to the political impact of the Russia-Belarus energy dispute and in 2011 after the Fukushima I nuclear accidents.
